Review: Galen Leather 5-Pen Zippered Folio

I’ve recently received a small zippered folio from Galen Leather to review. I was already familiar with the brand because it’s hard to be in the fountain pen world and not have heard of Galen Leather. It’s one of the few brands that’s dedicated to creating leather accessories for fountain pens and they’ve recently started to expand their business with wooden desk accessories and dipped their toes into ink and pen collaborations.

The package arrived pretty quickly even though the recent earthquake ravaged Turkey not long before that. I was glad to hear they were all okay. Despite the situation, Yusuf still handcrafted the beautiful pen case for me. It’s a family company and every product is handmade. The pen case came with a small cotton satchel filled with goodies. Turkish coffee, tea, stickers, and a note about the company. The cardboard box the pen case came in protected it well through shipping. It’s a little banged up at the corners but I care more about the pen case than the box.

5-pen Zippered Folio

This zippered leather folio is made to hold five pens on the left side and it fits a thin A6 notebook on the right side. It’s a perfect size to take a few pens and paper with you in your bag.

The crazy horse leather is a type of leather that already looks distressed. People always say that leather looks more beautiful the longer it’s used because it’s beginning to tell it’s story. The crazy horse leather has already started that story. It won’t look untouched when you received it. I picked the green colour because I love the emerald colour on the website. My case however, has more yellow in it, making it a warmer green while I prefer a cool green.

The size is just big enough to fit the pens and fit neatly into my purse. The A5 folio I own almost doesn’t fit and I struggle to get it out of my bag. So I’m happy with this smaller size. I can take my pens, write any brain farts that come up with ease. I have three Pelikan M200s and two Sailor Pro Gear Slims in it, currently, with an A6 Clairefontaine notebook. It closes well, without straining the zipper, but because the width of the zipper is the max, I would not recommend using a thick notebook with thicker pens. I don’t know if the leather will ease up the more you use it and I haven’t had it long enough to try out, so don’t take my word for it. My TWSBIs fit but I’m afraid to keep it closed for a longer time since I do see strain when I fill it with them.

I recommend this pen case for people who want to take their pens with them and want to write small bits on the go. If you want to write for longer periods and already have a notebook, planner, or journal, I recommend the larger A5 size. That one also have more space for pens and other items, becoming more of a catch-all folio. The leather is gorgeous and beautifully made. I can say they will last a long time since I’ve owned the A5 for over a year now.
